As seen in our last post, both Anorexia Nervosa an As seen in our last post, both Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia are harmful for health, especially for a growing teenager.

It may lead to Anemia, other nutritional deficiencies and at its worst - organ failure. Look out for signs like constipation, fatigue, weight loss, losing focus in studies, dehydration, and keep a watch on your daughter's eating patterns.

Do not allow body shaming within the family, for example, "Beta, you've put on weight."

Also discuss this with your daughter if she is experiencing it in school.
The best way to make her feel more confident and energetic is to adopt healthy eating practices in the family.

Don't have separate eating rules for children and adults. Practice it yourself. Become a role model and your daughter will follow you.

As your daughter starts worrying more about how sh As your daughter starts worrying more about how she looks, especially when compared to her peers, you'll see her trying to take charge of her own eating habits. Some tend to fast thinking it will help with weight loss, others do this similarly but with controllable binging followed by vomiting it out.

None of these habits are healthy or should be encouraged. Try to find the source of the problem - is your daughter worried about bullying, or underperforming in a sport, or is there another reason that has put her off eating?

As your child reaches late adolescence, they start As your child reaches late adolescence, they start contemplating on what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’. This leads to your daughter trying to understand her own thoughts and process better, by trying to establish an "adult" relationship with your partner and you, and rather than considering you as an authority, she’d like to discuss and take advice as equals.

Peers play a heavy influence in what your daughter likes and thinks. As friendships and romantic relationships become more stable, she’ll start to venture out more, and spend more time exploring than spending her time with you and family.

This shift can be difficult for both parent and child, and trying to force them to listen to you, can lead to emotional turmoil. This can be observed in their mood swings, diminished interest in play activities, concentration difficulties, behavior problems in the form of anger and aggression, pessimism, decreased appetite, and decreased sleep.

Physical punishment at school, Self or parental dissatisfaction with academic achievement, not foreseeing a favourable career path, and hostel life can lead to depression.

Keep these in mind before confronting your child about their mood swings.

Being a teenager (13-17 years) is the last stage o Being a teenager (13-17 years) is the last stage of adolescence before your daughter becomes a young adult. During this time, teens will see rapid changes with their body that can leave them feeling confused and even scared.

Puberty affects everyone differently. Changes with puberty may happen slowly, or several changes may occur at the same time which can leave them feel insecure as they compare their growth with those of their peers. Discussing the development and changes that your teenage daughter will undergo and being there to comfort and look after her will ensure she is healthy both in mind and body.

Look forward to our posts on teenage nutrition to understand what to feed your daughter for her optimum growth and development!
