Drinking citrus juice or eating other foods rich in vitamin C while you’re eating iron rich foods increases the body’s iron absorption. Serve a glass of orange or lemon juice along with your daughter’s meal, or make her eat amla or guava at breakfast or at snack time. Just by squeezing a piece of lemon on your green veggies, dals and soups you increase the iron absorption of your meal.
In vegetarian and vegan diets, iron absorption may be optimized by including vitamin C-containing vegetables during meals. Remember, the leafier and greener they are – the better!
