Arogya’s mDiabetes Program – causing a ripple effect in the community

Posted on: July 23rd, 2024 by Arogya World

Arogya World’s mDiabetes program is a powerful mobile health initiative educating people on diabetes and its prevention through lifestyle change. Its mission is to inspire individuals to embrace healthy behaviors to prevent this chronic disease.

As part of  Catalyst 2030’s CoLive Health subgroup and with funding from Catalyst 2030, mDiabetes was successfully launched on April 10, 2023. We partnered with Sri Sathya Sai Sarla Hospital (in Karnataka’s Chikaballapur district) and ISAP Foundation (in Jharkhand’s Bokaro, West Singhbhum, Saraikela, Koderma, and Gumla districts), to implement this program, by working with their frontline workers to recruit people into our program.

Key findings:

  1. This collaborative project used the best strengths of willing NGO partners and established a new avenue to scale up mDiabetes. And showed that incentivizing frontline workers is a viable way of recruiting community members into public health programs like mDiabetes. The partners and Catalyst 2030 are discussing the next steps including scaling.
  2. We got encouraging results – The knowledge that diabetes is preventable, increased from 64%  to 75.3%. The belief that lifestyle changes are the best way to control diabetes increased from 68.8% to 87.5%.
  3. Dietary habits improved – the intake of 2-3 servings of green vegetables and fruits daily increased by nearly 20%. Physical activity improved significantly as well.
  4. Nearly 90% of respondents mentioned making lifestyle changes after exposure to the intervention.
